At the same ceremony, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed profound regret over the tragic incident, highlighting the devastating impact on the families left behind. With 21 children orphaned and 10 women widowed, including three who are pregnant, the toll on these families is heart-wrenching. According to The PUNCH, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja noted that, “It was sad that those responsible for their deaths were those they swore to protect.” Lt. Gen. Lagbaja emphasized the solemn duty of the Nigerian Army and the nation to support and provide solace to the bereaved families.
