He noted that the stolen cars were predominantly transported to Anambra, Kano, and occasionally smuggled out of the country, with Onitsha serving as a hub for dismantling and selling them as scrap.
Shedding light on the modus operandi of the thieves, he revealed their reliance on a vast array of spare keys, including master keys, to facilitate the theft and subsequent transportation of vehicles. He stated that in order to evade detection, stolen vehicles were swiftly converted into commercial vehicles, allowing perpetrators to blend in seamlessly with regular traffic while bypassing security measures.
He said in a live coverage with Channels TV, ”Kelechi Uzogwe is an expert in removing vehicle trackers, all stolen vehicles from Rivers state must pass through him. He’s also a wonderful mechanic and rewire at the same time. Most of these cars stolen are taken to Anambra, Kano and some of them find their way out of the country. The cars are taken to Onitsha where they are pieced and sold as scraps.
In total, 79 vehicles have been linked to all these suspects you see here. The funny thing is that most of these suspects met while they were in correctional center. About five of them are ex-convicts.”
Speaking on how the robbers operate, he said, ”How did they steal these cars? They have a lot of spare keys that have been recovered from them and they use master keys as well as to move these vehicles away. How do they drive these vehicles out of town? They quickly convert them to commercial vehicles. Go to park and pick up passengers and they drive out of town with the passengers.
