Despite the meager pay that troops get, retired military officer Captain Sadeeq Shehu [rtd] has claimed that people don’t join the military only for financial gain. He maintained that it is a sign of a soldier’s devotion motivated by patriotism to choose to risk all for a very meager monthly salary, such as N50,000. He said in an interview with Arise TV, ”I will say as a retired military personnel that all over the world, nobody joins the military because of the pay. And that is the reality. When the Chief of Defense staff appeared before the National Assembly, he was telling us the kind of pitiful amount that is being said to soldiers on operations.
You need to go to some of the barracks to see how our soldiers live. Only few people will agree to present themselves as a target to be shot for N50,000 a month. But that is the work of a soldier.
