Former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has defended his choice to tear down shanties in the face of criticism from a human rights activist. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Wike defended the move in a recent interview that AIT posted on YouTube, pointing down that the shanties served as havens for criminals. He said that during his time as Rivers State’s governor, he issued an order to have the state’s shantytowns demolished, and that during that process, a sizable cache of AK-47 firearms was found. According to him, the action reduced criminal activity. He maintained that after wreaking devastation, criminals would seek sanctuary in shantytowns.

In Wike’s words: “When I was governor of the state, we found out that most of these criminals take refuge in these shanties. When were demolishing shanties we found so many Ak-47 riffles because nobody knew that is where when they cause havoc, they go in and stay. You won’t know until when we demolished those shanties, insecurity started coming down. So for anybody to come out to say that demolishing shanties is one of the reasons why you have increase in criminality, that is not correct”. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
