The case, which had been going on for a while, concerned a disagreement about a Nigerian gas processing project that went bankrupt. P&ID then pursued compensation, and at one stage a London-based arbitration panel granted the corporation an award of $6.6 billion.
However, through the detailed examination and scrutiny led by Judge Knowles, the judicial system was able to uncover evidence of corruption and fraud, which ultimately led to a significant reduction in the compensation amount. In a recent judgment, the judge reduced the P&ID award to $1.5 million, saving Nigeria from an enormous financial burden and potential loss.
The senator credited Judge Knowles for his pivotal role in saving Nigeria from a staggering potential loss of $11 billion in the case of Nigeria versus the engineering firm Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID).
