Colonel Hassan Stan Labo, a retired military officer, has claimed that people who had ties to terrorism were placed to positions in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet and that he saw government representatives actively pushing for terrorists to be granted amnesty. Furthermore, he observed an excessive emphasis on apprehending Prisoners of War (PWs) rather than taking proactive measures to eradicate terrorists within the forest. He expressed concerns about how the eight-year Buhari government will affect security, pointing out how deeply ingrained racial, tribal, and religious influences are in the process of making political decisions. He said in an interview with Vanguard, ”What we have witnessed in the eight years while the Buhari administration is the complicit lines of actions played by religion, tribe, ethnicity, etc and how they informed decisions at the political strategic level of decision making. We saw persons with close relationships with terrorists being appointed into Buhari’s cabinet. We witnessed top government officials lobbying amnesty for terrorists etc. More emphasis was placed on the taking of Prisoner of War [PWs] rather than the outright elimination of terrorists in the forest.
