The Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, has provided insights on the causes of banditry and unrest in Zamfara and other northwest regions. General Musa clarified that certain Fulani, who are traditional herders, participate in cattle rustling in a video that TVC posted on YouTube. According to him, cows are incredibly significant to the Fulani people, and losing one is like losing everything. General Musa also pointed out that the overall situation is aggravated by a mix of poverty, lack of infrastructure and clashes between farmers and herders, as well as between the Hausa-Fulani. He said political issues and illegal mining also contribute to the instability in the region
