The Military Did Not Bring Banditry, Boko Haram, & IPOB, This Mess Was Brought By Politicians -According to Professor Usman Yusuf

Professor Usman Yusuf, a former CEO of the National Health Insurance Scheme, has claimed that political insurrections like banditry, Boko Haram, and IPOB are addressed by the military. He contended that because the military is expected to mop up problems it didn’t cause, it is overburdened. He questioned if societies could be brought to peace by the military alone. He underlined that while the military cannot directly mediate peace between people, its responsibility is to foster an environment that is favorable to peace. He expressed worry that recently trained soldiers were being sent to fight without having lived in barracks, and he advocated for an open discussion to resolve the issues rather than continuing the status quo. He said in an interview with Arise TV, ”Do we honestly think the military can bring peace to our societies? The answer is No. The military role is to provide an enabling environment for peace. The military cannot bring peace between people. It is people who will bring peace to themselves. All the military does where it goes for operation is to put out the flames. We are putting the military in a situation where it cannot win.

The military did not bring banditry, Boko Haram, and IPOB, this mess was brought by politicians. The military is brought in to clean up the mess. The military is chewing more than it can swallow. It’s doing enough and it’s doing a lot. You train a soldier now and he’s sent straight to the battlefield. Many have never seen barracks.
