Rivers: As Ikwerre LG Chairman Vows Not To Vacate Office On June 17, More Political Crisis Looms

According to DAILY POST, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, the chairman of the Ikwerre Local Government, has pledged not to resign from his position on June 17, 2024, sparking further political unrest in Rivers State. According to DAILY POST reports, On March 13, 2024, the Rivers State House of Assembly, under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, passed an amendment bill extending the tenure of council chairmen. But, a recent ruling by the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt nullified this extension, citing inconsistencies with the 1999 Constitution and Section 9 (1) of Rivers State Law No 5 of 2018.

In a viral video, Nwanosike dismissed the court’s ruling, asserting the legitimacy of the assembly’s law and his intention to remain in office. Addressing his supporters, he emphasized that the amendment by the Amaewhule-led assembly stands, accusing the state governor of failing to conduct local government elections.

Nwanosike challenged authorities to enforce the court’s decision, asserting, “If the Speaker of the assembly says that I should remain in office, so shall we stay in office.
