“If you like, be annoyed. But the truth is that for the most part (there are exceptions), Christianity in Nigeria is Shallow, while Islam and pre colonial Catholicism are Deep. The exception applies mainly to Northern Christians.”

Islam has a thousand-year history in the geographical region now known as Nigeria, while Catholicism was accepted and syncretized into the natural religions of the Itsekiri and Bini people in the 15th century.

Christianity in Nigeria is less than 200 years old, and most of the Christian communities in the region have a similar history.

The first embassy in the area was the Papal Nuncio to the Bini and Itsekiri, built in the 16th century on a road now called Papal Via, which has been altered to Akpakpava Road, opposite the Oba of Benin’s palace.

Christianity in Nigeria is primarily a result of colonialism, with the exception of a few fringe groups like the White Garment churches. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
