Reno Omokri, a former media assistant to former president Goodluck Jonathan, has defended Punch Newspapers in the wake of a report that claimed the Central Bank of Nigeria was thinking of turning $30 billion in domiciliary deposits into Naira. Omokri showed empathy for Punch in this particular situation, even though she acknowledged that media outlets occasionally make mistakes. In a post made available on his verified X handle, formerly known as Twitter, Omokri questioned the integrity of Arise News, labeling the media outlet as “patently dishonest” and challenging its claim to be the “Number One Streaming Channel in Africa.” Omokri disputed Arise’s ranking, claimingthat they are not even among the top three in Nigeria, let alone the entire continent.
Omokri accused Arise News of perpetuating multiple lies, citing instances where the media outlet allegedly fabricated stories about Bola Tinubu.
He mentioned the false claim that, Chicago State University denied Tinubu’s admission, attendance, and graduation, which Omokri personally verified as untrue during a visit to the university.
Additionally, he accused Arise News of publishing a fake statement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging an investigation into Tinubu’s links to a drug ring.
