Prof Chidi Anselm Odinkalu Response After Okonkwo Said Some Lawyers Bring Frivolous Cases To S’Court Just To Become SAN

Human rights advocate and attorney Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu responded to remarks made by Kenneth Okonkwo, a leader of the Labour Party (LP), suggesting that certain attorneys file pointless matters before the Supreme Court in order to be eligible to serve as SANs. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Okonkwo made the statement in a report that was published by SUNDAY SUN.

He was speaking on the reason why the Supreme Court needs to be decongested when he made the statement.

He was quoted as saying;

“Another unfortunate reason lawyers bring frivolous cases before the SC, even when their clients refuse to pay them is to use the appearances as qualifying criteria for the award of the prestigious position of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). In guideline 3(7)(1) of the qualification for the position of SAN, every candidate is required to provide particulars of 10 contested cases that the applicant considers to be of particular complexity, difficulty or sensitivity handled in superior courts or before an arbitrator. He doesn’t need to win those cases”.

However Chidi Odinkalu has now reacted to the statement. In a post that he shared on his official X handle, he said Kenneth Okonkwo has offered some ideas on how the judiciary can be free from the Supreme Court. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
