However, heartbreak struck for the Gunners for the second consecutive year when City clinched the title by defeating West Ham on the last day.

City’s victory was labeled “not fair” by Kai Havertz, but Arteta provided his perspective on the missed opportunities that thwarted Arsenal’s title ambitions.

“For sure [the 2-0 defeat to] Aston Villa at home [in April],’ Arteta said during his post-match conference.

“In the first half, it should have been 4-0. Maybe the story would have been different.”

Arteta also pointed at City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham in the penultimate round of fixtures as another crucial moment.

“What happened last Tuesday, maybe we could have been champions,” Arteta said, “These are the margins that are so, so, so small.”

Despite the disappointment, Arteta remained optimistic about Arsenal’s future.
