The mother of seven reportedly disclosed this to VANGUARD NEWS when one of its correspondents went to the jungle where she and a few other community members were stranded. Evelyn described how that fateful day, when the military stormed into their village and demanded to see the leader of the community, happened while she was on her farm.
According to Evelyn, the soldiers wanted to arrest their leaders without telling them what he did. She noted that they tried to beg the soldiers but they opened fire at them. The mother of 7 stated that the people of Okuama had no hand in the killing of the soldiers, noting that it was some assailants who came in boats that opened fire at the residents and soldiers, killing scores.
Hear her, “We told them that our chairman had gone to the farm, and two leaders called him from the farm. We then entertained them before our chairman came. They said they wanted to go with our chairman and leaders. We inquired why they would arrest them.
Therefore, other women and I resisted and held them on the legs, and were pleading, they said if we resisted, they would shoot, next thing was fire, I did not even know how I escaped.
