The Nigerian international has been tipped for a blockbuster move to Stamford Bridge for the last 18 months. As well as Chelsea, Arsenal have also been linked.
Osimhen, who recently signed a new contract with Napoli which includes a release clause over £100million, has made a name for himself in Italy with a prolific goalscoring record. Last campaign, the 25-year-old scored 31 goals in 39 appearances to help Napoli win the Scudetto.
His form has been up and down this term. Osimhen is currently away at the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria but that hasn’t stopped speculation growing linking him with a move to the Premier League.
Speaking on his future with Sky Italy, he said: “I am happy with the president [of Napoli]. I have a good relationship with him, I cannot lie, he has been with me since I signed for the club in 2020.
“I have a good relationship with his family also. It is always important for me to make sure there is nothing wrong, regardless of what has happened, with the relationship with him and his family. He has been supportive of me outside the pitch and of course, I give my all trying to win the Scudetto with them.”
Asked about ever moving to England, he confessed: “Of course one day, definitely, but for now I have other plans in my career I am looking forward to. When the time comes, everyone will know.”
football.london’s Josh Holland says: Osimhen clearly wants a move to the Premier League, at some point in his career. Yet despite all the speculation and reports, it seems that he’s not leaving Napoli any time soon.
His participation in AFCON makes any possible January move almost impossible. His situation is certain to be assessed in the summer, but as he’s said, he’s focused on other things. What these things are, only he knows.
So the question lies, what do Chelsea do? Do they wait until ‘one day’ means summer 2024 or do they divert their attention elsewhere on another striker? Think it’s maybe time for the latter.
And speaking of other strikers, the curious case of Kylian Mbappe and his future at Paris Saint-Germain has seemingly taken another turn. According to RMC Sport journalist Daniel Riolo, the French giants have offered a proposal that will ‘far exceed’ an annual salary of €100million (£86.15m) for Mbappe.
Riolo has already suggested that Real Madrid are prepared to offer their own proposal ahead of the summer. However, their offer is reportedly only worth €30million (£26.84m).
football.london’s Josh Holland says: Mbappe’s case is a strange one. He’s available on a free transfer in the summer and while we know he will cost so much, Chelsea are not shy to flex their financial muscle to get their man. But it just doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen.
Todd Boehly has spoken before about making blockbuster transfers and bringing superstars to Stamford Bridge. However, Mbappe just seems destined to move to Real Madrid in the summer. PSG are doing their best to keep hold of the forward, but an annual salary of £86million will see him earn over £1.5million-per-week. That’s just sustainable.
PSG would be putting all their eggs into Mbappe’s basket in hope of reaching the European football pinnacle. The only way tying the Frenchman down to a new deal would be smart business is if they then sell him for a world-record figure and the contract is just their insurance – rather than lose him for nothing.
