He said, “What I know about the campaign of Obi was that, for the first time in a very long time in our country, we had a candidate who was inflaming ethnic passions. And that was the way the elections were that time. He was inflaming ethnic passions and religious passions, bringing two dangerous things into our politics – ethnicity and religion.”
Onanuga was asked if he does not think that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) brought those sentiments into the elections too. In response, he said that if Tinubu had done same thing during the campaigns he would not have lost Lagos State during the election.
He said that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was not about religion, because the ticket did not even win massive votes in Borno State where the Vice President comes from. He said that the reason President Bola Tinubu picked Kashim Shettima as his running mate was because he believed that Shettima had the qualities he needed, and not because he was a Muslim.
