Obi: For The First Time In Our Country We Had A Candidate Who Was Inflaming Ethnic Passions- According to Bayo OnanugaSome of the statements made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, throughout the campaign have been attributed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to threats against Nigeria’s peace and unity. During an interview with Channels Television’s Seun Okinbaloye on MIC ON PODCAST, Onanuga stated that Nigerians had a candidate (Peter Obi) who was stoking ethnic tensions for the first time in a very long time. He said, “What I know about the campaign of Obi was that, for the first time in a very long time in our country, we had a candidate who was inflaming ethnic passions. And that was the way the elections were that time. He was inflaming ethnic passions and religious passions, bringing two dangerous things into our politics – ethnicity and religion.”

Onanuga was asked if he does not think that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) brought those sentiments into the elections too. In response, he said that if Tinubu had done same thing during the campaigns he would not have lost Lagos State during the election.

He said that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was not about religion, because the ticket did not even win massive votes in Borno State where the Vice President comes from. He said that the reason President Bola Tinubu picked Kashim Shettima as his running mate was because he believed that Shettima had the qualities he needed, and not because he was a Muslim.
