Insiders disclosed that Edun’s proposal follows President Tinubu’s recent directive to present a new wage template. The move comes amid ongoing tensions between the Nigerian government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has been demanding a minimum wage of N494,000.

Earlier, the NLC criticized the government for not offering a new minimum wage proposal, despite assurances of a figure higher than N60,000. The Labour Congress expressed its frustration on social media, urging the government to act promptly as the one-week ultimatum neared its end.

Despite initial delays, Edun, accompanied by Minister of Budget and National Planning Atiku Bagudu, presented the new wage proposal to the President at the presidential villa in Abuja. Edun assured the public that there was “no cause for alarm.”

The government’s previous offer of N60,000 had sparked an indefinite nationwide strike, which was temporarily suspended. The NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been engaged in negotiations, emphasizing the urgent need for a living wage.

TUC President Festus Osifo confirmed that the government had yet to make a concrete offer beyond discussing principles. He expressed hope that further negotiations would yield a substantive proposal.
