Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper, emerged as the game’s MVP after Aston Villa of the English Premier League defeated Lille of the French Ligue 1 by a score of 4 goals to 3 on penalties, securing a spot in the 2023–2024 Europa Conference League semifinals. It is a common knowledge that once a footballer receives two yellow cards, he or she will be given a red card but that was not the case during the game between Aston Villa and Lille. This occurrence took place because Emiliano Martinez got the second yellow card after the in-game period.

According the rules of the world football governing body, FIFA, a player can be given a red card and be given a marching order if he or she receives it during the normal 90 minutes or the 30 minutes extra time. So, since Martinez got his second yellow card during the penalty shootout, it was not possible for him to be shown a red card.
