In 2018, Leah and other schoolgirls were abducted. Leah was not released later, but the other girls were.

In an interview with Silverbird TV, Nmadu who is one of those fighting for Leah’s freedom said she has been forced to marry about three different men and now has three children. He said Leah is only 21 years old and has spent six years in captivity, thereby missing out on her education. He expressed how heartbreaking Leah’s situation is, not only for her family but also for the entire Christian community and other caring Nigerians.
