In a recent Punch report, Abe recalled situations in which Amaechi expressly discouraged him from running and even threatened to destroy his campaign. He claimed Amaechi visited his home in Abuja and cautioned him against running, alleging he (Abe) lacked the financial resources to win delegate support. He added that at a party meeting in Port Harcourt, Amaechi allegedly threatened to destroy the party if Abe dared to confront his handpicked successor, Dakuku Peterside.

Abe added that the conflict between himself and Peterside was unnecessary and he asserted that Amaechi’s preference for Peterside as his successor caused division within the party and the state.
