The Igbo people whose houses are being demolished by the Lagos government, according to Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, bought their land from native landowners many years ago. Although he acknowledged that the government had the right to purchase land, he emphasized that impacted parties must be properly notified and compensated. He continued by expressing his displeasure with how the Igbo community and all other residents were being treated unfairly in the midst of the current economic crisis. He argued against interfering with businesses, particularly in these hard times. He called on the 36 state governments as well as Abuja to acknowledge the country’s dilemma and desist from taking any measures that would make it more difficult for citizens to make a living.

He said in an interview with Arise TV, ”It’s not fair for the Igbos and it’s not fair for anybody in this country to come at this time when we are passing through tribulation and crisis in our economy to stop businessmen from means of their livelihood. So I think that every government in the 36 States and Abuja should know that this Nation is passing through a crisis.

Any act that will mean stopping somebody means our livelihood should be postponed. We discovered that our people bought these lands in lagos many years ago from the natives. They built houses there and then they lived there. Now the government wants to acquire those places. There is nothing wrong with that. As far as we are concerned, the government has got a right to acquire land but the government must make sure that proper notice is given. Not when you just give 5 days’ notice.
