Thousands of people in Gaza’s Shejaia neighborhood left their homes on Sunday as Israel issued further evacuation orders, according to a Reuters report. “For your safety, you must evacuate immediately to the south,” the Israeli army announced on social media. Hamas’ armed wing confirmed it had launched rockets at an Israeli military base.
Residents scrambled to leave Shejaia, with many carrying children and belongings on donkey carts and rickshaws. Others walked through the night, clutching backpacks as they sought refuge in safer parts of Gaza.
This latest wave of displacement is part of a 13-month-long conflict that has repeatedly uprooted families in the region.
Central Gaza also faced intense bombardment, with airstrikes on Al-Maghazi and Al-Bureij camps killing at least 10 Palestinians. Meanwhile, in Gaza City, a hospital director was reportedly injured in an Israeli drone attack.
The crisis deepened as heavy winter rains flooded refugee tents across Gaza, leaving thousands exposed to the cold and wet conditions. “We ran in the middle of the night,” said Rami, a displaced father of four. “The rainwater flooded the tent, the food is gone, the kids screamed, and I am afraid they will get sick.”
The floods destroyed hundreds of makeshift shelters, sweeping away food supplies and leaving families exposed to the elements.
Gaza’s Civil Emergency Service called on aid organizations to provide better tents and caravans to prevent further suffering.
