"Is S'East Not Part Of Nigeria? If We Want Nigeria To Be One, S'East Must Have Their Turn" According to AdebanjoChief Ayo Adebanjo, the head of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has stated that while he did not know Peter Obi from Adam, he backed him in the 2023 presidential race because he adhered to the late Obafemi Awolowo’s teaching that devolution of power is necessary for Nigeria to remain unified. The Afenifere leader stated in an interview with The Sun on Saturday that the Afenifere position was that the presidency should go to the region that had not held it previously, even after the governors passed a resolution demanding that the South receive the presidency. He said that even though President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is their man, they did not support him because they believed that it was not their turn.

Speaking further, he questioned if the South-East is not part of Nigeria, and added that if Nigerians want a united country, then the South-East region must have their own turn too.

He said, “Even though Bola Tinubu is our own man, it was not our own turn.

“Yar’Adua came, after that Jonathan came. After Jonathan, Buhari, and after Buhari the thing returned to the South. Must it go to the South-West? Or must it go to the South-South? Is the South-East not part of Nigeria? If we want Nigeria to be one, then the South-East have their own turn.

“Go and read the statement of Afenifere in supporting Peter Obi for president in the last election. I don’t know Obi from Adam. It is the principle Awolowo gave us that if you want Nigeria to be united, there must be devolution of power.”
