In recounting the political history of Nigeria, Zaid Ayuba, National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Council, notes that under the First Republic, the Igbo people of the South-East and the northern region were political partners. This is according to a report published in the Sun. He claims that the Igbo people “drifted away” from that union, though, and draws a comparison between politics and marriage, emphasizing the need of finding common ground with one’s spouse. He said, “If you follow the antecedent of Nigerian political history, you will realize that in the First Republic, the northern part of Nigeria was an ally of the South-East. It was the Igbo who along the line drifted away from the political nature of Nigeria. Politics is a marriage; you cannot afford to marry someone who does not have the same ideology as you.
