In a report by Vanguard, Professor Akhaine said he was locked up in Birnin Kebbi Prison when he learned that Ken Saro-Wiwa had been executed by General Sani Abacha. He said when he heard of Saro-Wiwa’s execution, he feared that he would also be executed due to the serious charges against him. He said he was accused of seeking foreign assistance to form an army.

Professor Akhaine said he and Beko Ransome-Kuti met Saro-Wiwa before his arrest and warned him not to return to Port Harcourt. He said despite their warnings, Saro-Wiwa chose to return to Port Harcourt where he was detained and eventually executed. He also said Saro-Wiwa was innocent of the crimes he was accused of
