I Received Information That The Woman Who Led Food Price Protest In Niger Has Been Arrested– According to Sowore

On Monday, a group of women in Niger blocked the Minna-Bida road at the Kpakungu Roundabout in protest, calling on Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to take action about the country’s hunger issue. The Niger State Police Command detained 22 young people and three women after the protest for their roles in planning it. According to DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer, Aisha Jibrin and her associates mobilized women and miscreants to block the Minna-Bida highway and Kpakungu roundabout, causing a disturbance to law and order. The arrests were made in response to the disruption caused by the protest.

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate for the African Action Congress and advocate for women’s rights, condemned the arrest of the protest organizer via his verified Twitter account. Sowore expressed outrage at the detention of the woman who initiated the food price protest in Niger State, calling it a heroic act. He demanded the immediate release of the arrested women and criticized the police action.

In his statement, Sowore warned of potential repercussions, predicting that such protests would escalate across Nigeria in response to the government’s handling of dissent. He emphasized the importance of supporting the women involved in the protest and urged the authorities to respect their right to peaceful assembly.
