FPRO Responded man who said many drivers think Zebra Crossings are created to beautify roads

On Saturday night, March 30, 2024, Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, responded to a man’s comment on his X handle, stating that many drivers believe zebra crossings are installed to beautify highways. Adejobi informed him that numerous innocent Nigerians have died as a result of careless driving and flagrant breaking of traffic laws. Many motorists, especially commercial vehicle drivers in Lagos State, give little or no regard for Zebra Crossings as they don’t bother to wait when pedestrians are crossing the road, thereby hitting or killing them.

However, a man, whose X handle is @EDBature, disclosed in his post that there is the need to deploy policemen to various Zebra Crossings because many drivers don’t wait at those crossings, thinking they are designed to beautify the roads.

Responding to the post however, Adejobi told him that there is the need to fight the menace of reckless driving and disregard for the Zebra Crossings, adding that this had led to the death of many innocent citizens.

He wrote: “Then we need more public enlightenment on that. We expect some NGOs and groups to take up this. Reckless driving and gross violation of our traffic laws kill many innocent Nigerians, and we need to fight these menaces. Thanks.”

Many people, especially those living in Lagos, also said some drivers think Zebra Crossings are designed to advertise a popular type of confectionery since it is made of black and white stripes.
