Villarreal and Real Madrid end a match that will go down in history at the Estadio de la Ceramica with a draw of 4–4. Both teams divided eight goals evenly. A poor giveaway from Ceballos inside his 18-yard box would give Sorloth the chance to nod one back, but Vazquez restored the two-goal advantage within 60 seconds, before Guler would double his tally in added time to give Ancelotti’s side a 4-1 lead at the break.

What ensued after the restart can only be described as 10 minutes of madness, with Sorloth registering a quickfire second-half hat-trick, giving him a total of four goals on the night and restoring parity with over an hour left.

Militao was thoroughly unable to handle the Norway international, and was replaced with a half-hour to go, with Nacho sent on to try and restore order.

Despite a number of substitutions, Real Madrid were unable to wrestle back the momentum and struggled to create chances in the second half, with only 0.17 of their 1.23 expected goals coming after the restart – compared to Villarreal’s total of 1.9, with over 70 per cent of that output coming in the second period.

Sorloth now leads the LaLiga scoring charts with 23, while three players registered two assists (Diaz, Vazquez and Moreno), in an eventful match that went without a winner.

The point leaves Real Madrid at the top of the table with 94 points ahead of a clash with Real Betis on the final day, while Villarreal stay eighth with 52 and end their campaign away from home against Osasuna.
