Farotimi Responds After X user's view on Nigerians' preference between Oluomo and Iweala for Presidency

Human rights advocate and attorney Dele Farotimi answered a tweet. The remark implied that distinct groups would have particular reasons for not supporting former NURTW chairman Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and World Trade Organization Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a presidential election in Nigeria. While the second group may prioritize voting for members of their own tribe, the Yoruba, the first group may not vote for a woman or a Christian. However, given that MC Oluomo is not well-liked by many, most people would wonder why they should vote for him.

Below is the post of the Twitter user, “If MC Oluomo and Mama Okonjo-Iweala were to contest for the presidency of Nigeria:

Northerners: Don’t vote for a Christian and unbeliever who is also a woman.

Yoruba Ponu: Don’t vote for Igbo; vote for our tribe, Yoruba Ronu.

Normal Nigerians: How can I vote for MC Oluomo when I’m not m*d?”

Responding to the comment, lawyer and human rights advocate Dele Farotimi expressed concern about the deep-rooted ethnic and religious biases in Nigerian society. He noted that these biases often cloud people’s judgment and hinder rational thinking. Farotimi acknowledged the truth in the comment but pointed out a fallacy within it. He criticized the tendency to generalize all “Northerners” and emphasized the diversity within the region, including states like Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kaduna.

In reply, Dele Farotimi said that, “This is how deeply ingrained ethnic and religious biases have become in our society, impairing our ability to think rationally and make sound judgments. No wonder we are where we are. Truthful as your post is, there’s a fallacy embedded in it, and this fallacy is largely responsible for the normalization of an abiding evil in our political calculus. Who are these monolithic “Northerners”? Does it include Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, and others?”
