The catastrophe occurred when the tanker, which was traveling from Effurun, lost control while trying to pass another car close to the boundary bridge separating Okpe Local Government Area and Uvwie. This is according to reports from The PUNCH. Witnesses recounted a horrifying scene in which many people were injured and the victims were charred beyond recognition.

Among the deceased was a secondary school boy who had just returned home, only to meet his demise in the engulfing flames. The mother of the three-year-old child was trapped in the inferno while attempting to save her daughter. The aftermath of the explosion saw buildings, vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks destroyed, amplifying the scale of the disaster. Director-General of the Warri, Uvwie, and Environs Development Agency, Prince Enjinyere, promptly assessed the damage and mobilized efforts to remove the fuel-laden truck from the road, minimizing further risk.

According to Channels Television News reports, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, accompanied by the State House of Assembly Speaker Emomotimi Guwor and former Okpe Local Government Council Chairman, visited the site to offer condolences and support to the affected community.
