Edo 2024:Samson Itodo “This is the first time that a political party won’t sign a peace accord”

Samson Itodo, the executive director of Yiaga Africa, a pro-democracy organization, reportedly voiced concerns to Channels Television about the possibility that the recent fallout from the Peace Accord will have a negative effect on voter turnout in the future Edo State governorship election, which is set for September 21, 2024. Itodo issued a warning on Thursday, saying, “What has happened today will further escalate the tension,” while discussing the politics of Channels Television.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

The tension stems from a significant dispute surrounding the Peace Accord, which aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process. While 17 political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), signed the peace pact led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar in Benin City, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declined to participate. PDP leaders, including the outgoing governor Godwin Obaseki and state chairman Tony Aziegbemi, cited allegations against the police as their reason for non-participation. Aziegbemi, in particular, was vocal about his party’s dissatisfaction, noting that a member had been detained by the police and not released.

“This is the first time that a political party won’t sign a peace accord” in about a decade, Itodo remarked. He emphasized that the absence of the PDP’s signature might exacerbate the existing crisis of confidence in Edo State, potentially leading to post-election disputes. Itodo urged the PDP to reconsider its stance and sign the accord to help reduce tensions.

The stakes are high with major contenders in the race, including PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, LP’s Olumide Akpata, and APC’s Monday Okpebholo. Ighodalo, who has received backing from the current governor, is facing competition from Okpebholo, who enjoys support from influential figures like former governor Adams Oshiomhole and deputy governor Philip Shaibu.

Itodo called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to facilitate a meeting with stakeholders to address their concerns. He also appealed to security agents and the electoral umpire to maintain impartiality. “If their (politicians’) concerns are addressed, they should go back to their supporters not to embrace violence,” Itodo said.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
