The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has vehemently opposed the decision, according to Sahara Reporters, in a daring retort to Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who recently argued against permitting Nigerians to carry arms. Dr. Bitrus Pogu, the National President of the MBF, stated that banning people from owning firearms would be harmful to their safety, particularly in light of the rising number of killings and attacks in the nation. Dr. Pogu, in a statement released on Monday, argued that the COAS’s stance contradicts the fundamental interest of the people. He emphasized the urgent need for Nigerians to be equipped with higher grades of arms to defend themselves against marauders who operate with sophisticated weapons, causing havoc with impunity.

Expressing his disagreement with the COAS’s directive, Dr. Pogu pointed out the inadequacy of security agencies in protecting Nigerians from criminal elements. According to him, “I completely disagree because the security agencies are not adequately protecting Nigerians as Nigerians are being killed like Chickens. Before now, Nigerians were allowed to carry some category of arms which are not up to the military grade. And if they have such arms, at least they can protect themselves. But when you have people (criminals) in the bushes with sophisticated weapons and their location is known and yet they are left there; even areas are left for them; and yet they want Nigerians to stay as chickens to be killed by these criminals. It means there is collusion to have Nigerians killed.”

He advocated for a reconsideration of the restriction on citizens carrying arms, citing the previous allowance of certain categories of arms, such as short guns. The MBF leader argued that Nigerians should not be left defenseless against criminals armed with sophisticated weapons.
