Speculations about a potential merger of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections were sparked after a meeting between Atiku and Peter Obi in Abuja.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Atiku reiterated his commitment to abide by the decisions of his party, stating that he would not contest the presidential ticket if the PDP chooses to zone it to the South or specifically to the South-East, where Peter Obi hails from.

When asked if he would support Peter Obi if he were chosen as the PDP’s candidate representing the South-East.

Atiku stated, “If the party decides that it’s the turn of the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I won’t hesitate to support him.”

Regarding his own potential candidacy in the 2027 elections, Atiku maintained that the decision rested with his party.
