The House of Representatives’ Spokesperson, Honorable Akin Rotimi, has discussed the ongoing dispute over the pay of Nigerian legislators. He said that he could show Nigerians his payslip to verify that he is saying the truth.
Rotimi said that the N4.9 million housing allowance that people are always talking about is an amount they receive once in four years, and not monthly.
He questioned the practicality of securing accommodation with such an amount spread over four years.
Rotimi added that appropriate action will be taken against those spreading fake news.
He said, “We saw some videos making rounds across social media about the salaries of the lawmakers, and there was a debate on the floor, and appropriate action will be taken against people publishing all these fake news.
“I can tell you categorically that the earnings of lawmakers is N600,000 per month, and some even earn a little less than that.
“So when someone comes and tells you that furniture allowance will be given every month, you begin to worry that people don’t know how things work.
“These things are being given within four years. I earn N600,000 per month and I can show Nigerians my pay slip if they want. Somebody will say we are given N4.9 million once for housing allowance, does that make any sense? No, it doesn’t.
