In a video that Channels TV posted to YouTube, Jonathan described how “commercial kidnapping,” which started as an issue in the Niger Delta in 2006 when he was the governor of Bayelsa, has since expanded throughout the nation. He claimed that by implementing more specialised security measures, the creation of state police units may aid in the decrease of abduction instances. He stated that the state police should have enough armaments to deal with criminals who frequently have sophisticated weapons.

In Jonathan’s words: “Commercial kidnapping started in 2006 when I was governor of Bayelsa in the Niger Delta. Now it has become a commercial venture all over the country and we have not been able to control it.
