Abure: Dele Farotimi Responds After Man Said He Wants Yoruba Person Like "Farotimi" To Be LP Chairman

Dele Farotimi, a Nigerian lawyer and activist, responded to a social media user who proposed that he be named National Chairman of the Labour Party because he is Yoruba. CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Julius Abure, the chairman of the Labour Party, was detained and later released before making this remark. “I pray someone like Dele Farotimi would agree to be the party’s leader,” the user added. I truly hope that the party’s head is a Yoruba guy of impeccable morals.”

In response, Farotimi said he found it demeaning to use his Yoruba ethnicity as a prerequisite for any position. He wrote:

“Aside from the fact that I am NOT a member of the Labor Party, I consider it demeaning to have my ethnic nationality used as a prerequisite for my qualification for any position. If the fact of my Nigerian victimhood is not enough, I do not desire the position.”

Farotimi took issue with pegging leadership qualifications to ethnic background rather than skills or values. He implied that his Nigerian identity should supersede ethnic considerations.
