Fubara: Court, No actions should be taken that could affect the outcome of this case

According to a Punch report, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s proposal to name caretaker committees for each of the state’s 23 local government areas has been met with stiff resistance from a group of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who support Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. Supporter of the walkout Speaker Martin Amaewhule proclaimed, “We will reject any caretaker appointments as they go against the constitution.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Amaewhule emphasized the importance of democratically elected local government officials, stating, “Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution mandates that local government officials should be democratically elected. Using caretaker committees is not in line with this.” With the current local government chairmen’s terms ending on June 17, 2024, he added, “We will not approve any caretaker committee nominations put forward by the governor.”

Concurrently, ‘The Supreme Council for Sim, World-Wide,’ a socio-political organisation, has asked Governor Fubara to swiftly forward nominees to the Assembly for caretaker committees. The attempt of the incumbent local government chairmen to prolong their terms through a recent Assembly amendment was criticised by Co-National Chairman Oji Ngofa, who called it illegal.

In other effort, all parties involved in the continuing conflict surrounding the House of Assembly have been ordered by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt to keep things as they are until July 20. This comes after a judicial battle to reverse a previous order that kept Assembly Leader Victor Oko-Jumbo in office. “No actions should be taken that could affect the outcome of this case,” the court stressed.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
