There are various theories as to why Manchester City’s Rodri Hernandez secured the prestigious award instead of Vinicius.
While some in Brazil suggest racial biases may have played a role, Real Madrid attributes the outcome to the club’s contentious relationship with UEFA. The decision process, however, involves votes from 100 people globally.
France Football Director Vincent Garcia clarified the situation, noting that the division of votes among Real Madrid players may have hurt Vinicius’ chances.
According to Football Espana, He said “Mathematically, they took away some points. That also sums up Real Madrid’s season, which placed between three and four players among the best in the world and the jury ended up distributing their votes among them, which benefitted Rodri”.
Rodri’s victory was a historic moment for Spain, becoming the first Spaniard to win the men’s Ballon d’Or in 64 years.
With Aitana Bonmati winning the women’s award, Spain became the first country to claim both honors in the same year. “It is something beautiful and historic,” Garcia said.
