Why a Traditionalist Was Arrested by Police for Burning the Quran

 

A possible ethno-religious crisis in Oyo town was successfully avoided by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Oyo State, according to Vanguard. “The public burning of the Quran by a traditionalist and the proposal by Islamic clerics to establish a Sharia Court could have caused widespread unrest, but our prompt actions prevented that,” said a DSS source.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

On the Sharia Court proposal, the source explained, “We invited the clerics for a sensitization session, informing them that only the Nigerian Constitution permits the establishment of courts. They understood this and withdrew their plans, issuing a public retraction.”

Regarding the Quran-burning incident, the source said, “We arrested the traditionalist who shared a video of himself burning the  Quran and making inflammatory statements. His actions posed a threat to public peace, but we’re investigating and preparing to prosecute him for incitement and other related offenses.”
