Perry, who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, expressed his concern about the rising threat of terrorism in Africa and its connection to international terror networks. In his remarks, he said, “The Nigerian Army has been doing an incredible job in combating groups like Boko Haram, but it’s clear that these terror organizations are not operating in a vacuum. They are being fueled by foreign sponsors, and we must get to the heart of who is backing them.”
Commenting specifically on General Mohammad’s recent statements regarding the sponsorship of Boko Haram, Perry added, “I support the Nigerian Army’s call for international action against terrorism. The allegations about foreign actors fueling extremism, particularly through financial and logistical support, must be taken seriously. However, we need to ensure that we are addressing the root causes of this violence, not just treating the symptoms.”
Perry acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that while Boko Haram’s insurgency is primarily a domestic issue, international involvement complicates the matter. “It’s imperative that the U.S. and other nations work closely with Nigeria to track these international connections and ensure that global powers, including some that may have been complicit in supporting terror, are held accountable,” he said.
On the topic of white supremacy, which General Mohammad had touched on in his speech, Perry expressed caution. “While it’s important to acknowledge the role of global extremist ideologies in terrorism, we must ensure our focus remains on the specific groups and individuals responsible for violence in Nigeria. Broadly attributing terrorism to any one ideology or race may not serve the cause of peace.”
