The OPC expressed concern over the circumstances of Farotimi’s detention, suggesting that defamation, as a civil matter, should not have led to criminal charges. The statement emphasized the need for justice, while also highlighting the importance of resolving the issue amicably.
“We are concerned that two illustrious sons of the Yoruba race—a father and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, and his ‘son,’ who is also a lawyer and rights activist, Dele Farotimi—are engaged in a legal battle,” the statement reads in part.
The group acknowledged Chief Afe Babalola’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s legal and educational sectors, noting his legacy in training over 300 lawyers and producing several Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs). The OPC commended Babalola as a beacon of hope, urging him to resolve the matter peacefully for the sake of the involved parties and the Yoruba community at large.
“With such a sterling reputation and global respect, no one can tarnish the image of this revered personality. We, therefore, appeal to Chief Afe Babalola to resolve this issue with wisdom and understanding, as this would be the most honorable way to address the lingering dispute,” the statement concluded.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
