Channels said that Senator Orji Kalu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), disclosed that President Bola Tinubu frequently takes nighttime drives around Abuja to observe firsthand the difficulties that regular Nigerians face. Kalu made these comments during an interview, where he emphasized that Tinubu is not a leader who is detached from reality. “The president some nights uses his car to go around and know what is happening in Abuja here. He is not a president that is locked up in the room,” Kalu explained. He described Tinubu as a “street person” who understands the suffering of Nigerians during these tough economic times.

The Nigerian economy has been going through a difficult period, with inflation hitting 32.7% in September 2024. The removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira have contributed to the rising cost of living, making basic goods and services more expensive for millions of Nigerians. Many people are struggling to make ends meet, and the impact of these policies has been widely felt.

Senator Kalu, however, defended Tinubu’s policies, describing them as “very courageous.” He noted that the economic hardships are not unique to Nigeria, pointing out that other countries around the world are also dealing with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted economies globally. “The pressure of COVID-19 has not gone,” Kalu remarked, adding that the global economy is still recovering.

Despite the tough situation, Kalu expressed confidence that the government is working hard to fix the economy. He praised the efforts of the APC in repositioning the economy and making the necessary reforms.

In response to accusations that lawmakers are out of touch with the realities facing the common man, Kalu said that these claims are often exaggerated.
