Syria regime imprisoned children until 18 before executing them under ‘terrorism

According to the Middle East Monitor, a recent investigation found that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s government has been holding youngsters in detention until they turn 18, at which point they are put to death. Since the start of the Syrian conflict and protests in 2011, authorities have detained and detained minors without trial until they reach the legal execution age of 18, at which point they are sent to military courts to face death sentences, according to an investigative report by the Syrian Investigative Journalism Unit (SIRAJ)…. The investigative team utilized insider sources, exclusive interviews with victims’ families, and public sources like social media to compile a list of 25 Syrian children who were disappeared as minors, later taken to military courts, and sentenced to death.

The investigation confirmed that all the children on this list were forcibly disappeared by the Syrian regime’s forces and security services. Despite being minors at the time of their arrests, they also faced the seizure of their assets.

The team verified the deaths of 24 out of the 25 detainees following their military court death sentences. It discovered that the regime employed unlawful practices to carry out these sentences through its 2012 ‘Anti-Terrorism Law.’

This list represents only a small fraction of the actual number of children kidnapped, detained, and executed by the regime once they reach the age of 18. An unnamed source, who had spent three years in military police overseeing detainees, claimed to have witnessed over 6,000 cases of minors sentenced to death. This figure is likely an undercount, as other officers may have encountered even more cases.

“The referral of detainees to military field courts clearly indicates the absence of the rule of law in Syria,” stated lawyer Muhannad Sharabati, legal officer at the Syrian Legal Development Program (SLDP). “The regime’s leadership completely controls the legislative and judicial branches, leading to the implementation of extraordinary laws and courts that violate international legal standards.”….
