
Sheikh Kamal Olohungbebe, the founder of the Al-Haqu Islamic Study and Prayer Group of Nigeria, has stated that Muslims in the South-West will only cast ballots for candidates who back the application of Sharia law in the area. He stated that Muslims will support any government that listens to their demands and will only vote for candidates who align with their religious interests.
The push for Sharia courts in the South-West has been gaining momentum.
Islamic organizations, such as the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria and the Concerned Yoruba Muslim Scholars in Nigeria, have called for the establishment of these courts in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos states.
They argue that Sharia courts would provide justice for Muslims in accordance with their faith.
However, the proposal has faced strong resistance, some Yoruba groups argue that the South-West, being religiously diverse, cannot accommodate Sharia courts.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has also opposed the idea, saying that no law in the state allows for such courts.
Despite this, Sheikh Olohungbebe remains firm in his stance and warned that politicians who refuse to implement Sharia courts risk losing Muslim support in the 2027 elections.
