Prof. Lugga cautioned that the North should be prepared for the possibility that Nigeria could split apart in the future, particularly in light of the current secessionist activities in the South, and he drew parallels between the southern region’s fight for self-determination and the significance of unity among northerners.
While the South has taken more measures to protect itself than the North, the professor argued that the North has failed to take organised action to defend its interests. He cited southern initiatives like the regional security network Amotekun as an example of proactive measures. Lugga pondered the precarious unity of northern and southern Nigeria and said that early Nigerian leaders worried about bringing the two regions together; those worries are still with us today.
