Despite Brighton’s dominance, Southampton showed resilience. Cameron Archer spurned a golden chance to equalize before halftime, firing wide from close range after an excellent delivery from Sugawara. Brighton’s João Pedro almost punished the visitors, but his low drive was expertly saved by goalkeeper Joe Lumley on the stroke of halftime.
Southampton came out revitalized in the second half, driven by the energetic Tyler Dibling. Their efforts paid off in the 55th minute when Flynn Downes fired in his first Premier League goal, pouncing on a rebound after Adam Armstrong’s shot was blocked. The Saints thought they had completed a dramatic turnaround eight minutes later when Archer slotted home from Ryan Fraser’s cross, only for VAR to disallow the goal for offside in a controversial decision.
The final stages were tense, with both sides pushing for a winner. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari blazed over the bar from a promising position, while Dibling saw his effort comfortably saved by Bart Verbruggen. Despite late half-chances, neither team could find a decisive goal.
