Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has disclosed how important his late wife Stella Obasanjo was in getting him released from prison under General Sani Abacha’s military rule. “When I was in prison, that woman left no stone unturned. She went all over the world to seek my release,” Obasanjo shared. “She went to Japan, she went to the entire Europe, she went to the Vatican, she went to Latin America, she went through Africa, she left no stone unturned for my release and God answered her prayers and the prayers of all those praying for me and I came out of prison alive.”
Obasanjo expressed profound gratitude for his wife’s dedication, describing her as a “woman of substance” whose efforts extended beyond family to impact his administration and Nigeria as a whole. The former president also conveyed his appreciation for the people of Edo State, who have honored Stella’s memory by naming a hospital after her.
Reflecting on Stella’s legacy, Obasanjo noted the importance of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital and thanked Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for overseeing its recent expansion. He expressed confidence that the hospital’s upgrades would serve the people of Edo State and the broader Nigerian community well.
