According to report by ICIR, the comments was made during a recent interview granted by Oshiomhole ahead of the Edo State governorship election.
During the interview, Oshiomhole criticised the Obasekis for their lack of children and questioned their decision not to adopt.
“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the First Lady, saying that our candidate had no wife,” Oshiomhole said in the interview.
“I am sorry she had to say that because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child,” he revealed.
They are childless. They are even not ready to adopt,” the former Governor added.
The remarks have not gone down well with many Nigerians, who took to various social media platforms to express their displeasure.
Many have accused Oshiomhole of stooping to a new low in political discussion and called on him to apologise for his comments.
A senior journalist, Richard Akinola, was among those who criticized Oshiomhole’s remarks.
In a Facebook post, Akinola described the senator’s comments as “utterly irresponsible” and out of place for a leader of his stature.
“Politics would come and go, but it is utterly irresponsible for Adams Oshiomhole to mock the First Lady of Edo, Mrs. Obaseki, as being barren,” Akinola wrote.
“Not getting married or divorced is a matter of choice, but not having a child in the African context is beyond individual couples,” he added.
On X (formerly Twitter), the backlash continued with many users voicing their disapproval.
