This directive emerged from the 311th Statutory Meeting of the university’s Senate, held on Thursday, 27th June 2024, where a report (Ref No: LASU/SEN/ST.311/024/AOB) from the university’s Security Unit was discussed.

The report highlighted inappropriate behaviors on campus, including staff and students using offices and classrooms for sleeping, complete with kitchen utensils and other temporary arrangements. These actions were deemed unacceptable, presenting significant security risks and health concerns.

The Senate also noted that members of the LASU Student Union Executive Committee have been using their offices at the Students Union Arcade for overnight stays, sometimes even allowing opposite-sex visitors. When confronted by security officers, these students often claim that the Arcade is student-controlled and autonomous, challenging the authority of security personnel.

In response to these issues, the Senate has implemented several measures:

“Members of staff and students should desist from the habit of sleeping overnight in offices and classrooms;

“Students have the grace to stay on campus overnight only during examination periods;

“Appropriate Disciplinary actions shall be taken against any erring members of staff or students;

“Any member of academic staff who, by exigencies of duty, needs to stay on campus overnight should notify the Chief Security Officer for the awareness of the Security Unit;

“University Management should issue a guideline to the LASUSU Executive Committee on the use of students Arcade and to let them understand that the facility (Students Arcade) is not for residential purpose.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
