Labo "The Nigerian Army Has Only One Recruitment Platform Where It Trains And Brings In New Recruits"

Colonel Hassan Stan Labo [Rtd], a security consultant and defense strategist, has expressed worries about the military’s seeming overabundance and linked it to enduring difficulties. He listed the unresolved “big five” concerns facing the military: finance, people, logistics, equipment, and motivation and welfare. He specifically brought attention to the serious shortage of manpower, pointing out that the Nigerian Army only uses one recruitment site, with an intake of about 5,000 recruits per year. However, he pointed out that the effective fresh entrance is much lower, at about 2,500, when one accounts for the yearly attrition brought on by casualties and regular retirement. He argued in favor of building more training facilities to fully address these issues.

He said in an interview with Arise TV, ”If the military was overwhelmed, we all know what may have informed such overwhelming of the military. We know we have severe manpower issues, which we have been hammering on for how many years now. The big five in the military have not been addressed; funding, manpower, logistics, equipment, motivation, and welfare. We have severe manpower issues in the military.

As we speak, the Nigerian Army has only one recruitment platform where it trains and brings in new recruits. And as we speak on an annual basis, we will only get about 5,000 men from that source. If you juxtapose that with the number of men who of course will be exiting the army on an annual basis. Either through casualties from the various operations and routine retirement, you will agree with me that at the end of the day, you are only seeing about 2500 fresh entrances of the 5,000 which you think you are bringing in.
